Helping Athletes Succeed

Frequently Asked Questions:

What motivated you to get involved in this project?

I've been involved with amateur sports for over 60 years. I've been a: player; coach; manager; general manager; convenor; commissioner; umpire; referee; administrator and a fan. I've seen athletes and teams with great potential work hard to succeed but were unable to do so because of a lack of funds.

How long do you plan on being involved with this project?

For one year only. I will be 70 years old this Spring and I could not have a better gift or memory from the year than knowing that I helped (even a little bit) at least five athletes achieve success.

In this day and age shouldn't amateur athletes expect to pay their own way to compete?

Most amateur athletes I know do pay for "most" of the expenses related to their sport. The financial support that they will receive from H.A.S. will never exceed 50% of their training and competition expenses.

The majority of military athletes (still in uniform in the Canadian Forces) are for the most part, already well sponsored.  Will H.A.S. support military athletes?

We will look at each athlete individually and his / her total expenses.  H.A.S. funds will complement what the athlete will pay out of his / her own pocket.

What about athletes competing in regional / national / CISM championships?

H.A.S. will not support athletes / teams  competing at approved Canadian Forces / CISM championships.

How about a CF athlete who is competing in a civilian local / provincial / national / world level competition but is receiving little or no "public" funding support? He / she has "Duty Status" only at no cost to the Crown.

We are definitely interested in helping these types of athletes.

What about a team from RMC which is not an approved varsity sport?

We would consider supporting a team or individual from this category, if they are given approval from college authorities to receive H.A,S. funds to help with their expenses.

Are you looking for individual or corporate sponsorship?

We are looking for both individual and corporate support. Because we are only going to be a one year operation we are not expecting Big high profile corporations to be Big sponsors. We do hope that those who read this and have / had a "connection" with the Canadian Forces and are now in an executive position in the "corporate world" that they will consider having their business / company being a H.A.S. Sponsor.

What type of athletes are you looking to support?

We are looking for athletes who are committed to excellence - individual and team sports.

Is there a particular age group?

No.  On our short list at the present time, the youngest athlete is about 16 years of age and the oldest is about 50.

How about gender?

We have identified great athletes from both genders.

Is there a preference between team or individual sports?

No, we expect to support both and we have both on our prospect list at the present time.

Is there a particular part of the country where you have identified athletes who may receive support?

Currently we have athletes from Coast to Coast who have been identified and deserving of  H.A.S. support.

Are you still interested in hearing about athletes deserving of support?

Yes, we invite sponsors to make us aware of athletes / teams who meet our criteria - committed to athletic / sports excellence and the athlete / team have a "connection" with the Canadian Forces.

What connection does H.A.S. have with RMC, the Canadian Forces, the RMC Club of Canada, or the RMC Club / Foundation?

None at all. I spent over 37 years in the CF and another 13+ years in and around RMC in various positions. For the most part CF athletes are very well supported.  However, I've observed some "falling through the cracks" and not receiving the financial support they deserve for a number of reasons - far to many to list here. In short, H.A.S. is a private not for profit organization who has one goal for 2010 - Helping at least five deserving athletes (teams) achieve success.

If you have any further questions send us a note and we will respond in a timely manner.
